Our approach: natural results, built to last

After 35 years of restoring smiles across the Eastern Suburbs, Dr Quill's approach remains straightforward: create restorations that look natural, function properly, and are built on a foundation of good oral health.

We won't rush you into treatment. If a damaged tooth can be saved with a simpler filling, we'll do that first. If you're missing teeth, we'll discuss all your options — bridges, implants, or partial dentures — and help you decide what makes the most sense for your situation and budget.

Getting the fit, function and aesthetics right

When we place crowns or bridges, we focus on getting the fit, function, and aesthetics right. That means:

  • Precise impressions or digital scans for accurate fit
  • Careful colour matching so restorations blend naturally
  • Checking your bite to ensure comfort
  • Using high-quality materials designed to last
  • Pain-free techniques throughout the process

The goal is to restore your tooth (or teeth) so effectively that you forget it was ever damaged or missing.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth. Think of it as a protective helmet that restores the tooth's strength, function, and appearance.

Modern crowns are made from high-quality porcelain or ceramic materials that look and feel like natural teeth. We carefully match the colour and shape to blend seamlessly with your smile — no one will know you have a crown unless you tell them.

The process typically involves:

1. Initial appointment — we prepare the tooth, take detailed impressions or digital scans, and fit you with a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made.

2. Lab work — your custom crown is crafted by skilled dental technicians to match your natural teeth perfectly (usually takes 2–3 weeks).

3. Final appointment — we remove the temporary crown and permanently cement your new crown in place. We'll make sure it fits comfortably and looks natural before you leave.

With proper care, dental crowns typically last 10–15 years or longer.

Same-day CEREC crowns

For many crowns, we can skip the temporary crown and the wait altogether. With our in-practice CEREC technology, the tooth is prepared as it would be for any crown, then a digital scanner captures a detailed 3D image instead of a traditional putty impression. The crown is designed on screen to fit your bite and neighbouring teeth, milled from a solid ceramic block right here in the practice, and bonded the same day.

For you, that usually means walking out with your finished crown in a single visit — no second appointment, and no waiting a week or two while a laboratory makes it. There are still cases where a laboratory-made crown is the better choice, such as demanding front-tooth cosmetic work that benefits from custom layering, so we decide tooth by tooth and talk you through the options.

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge literally "bridges" the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of artificial teeth (called pontics) supported by crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap.

Bridges are a fixed solution — they're cemented in place, so they feel stable and natural when you eat and speak. Unlike dentures, you don't remove them.

Benefits of dental bridges:

  • Restore your ability to chew comfortably
  • Prevent remaining teeth from shifting into the gap
  • Maintain your facial structure and smile
  • Improve speech if missing teeth were affecting pronunciation
  • Fixed solution that feels natural and secure

The process for getting a bridge is similar to getting a crown, usually requiring two appointments over 2–3 weeks.

When you might need a crown or bridge

Dental crowns and bridges are restorative treatments designed to repair or replace teeth that can't be fixed with simpler solutions like fillings.

You might need a crown if:

  • A tooth is severely cracked, broken, or worn down
  • You've had a root canal treatment (the tooth needs protection)
  • A large filling has failed or a tooth has extensive decay
  • You want to strengthen a weak tooth before it breaks
  • You need to improve the shape or appearance of a damaged tooth

You might need a bridge if:

  • You're missing one or more teeth and want a fixed (non-removable) solution
  • Missing teeth are affecting your ability to chew comfortably
  • Gaps are causing other teeth to shift out of position
  • You want to restore your smile without dental implants

At Dentist in the Park, we take the time to explain your options clearly. If there's a more conservative treatment that will work, we'll tell you. We only recommend crowns or bridges when they're genuinely the best solution for your situation.

Crowns vs. veneers: what's the difference?

This is a common question. Here's the simple answer:

Veneers cover only the front surface of a tooth and are used for cosmetic improvements on healthy teeth (staining, minor chips, small gaps).

Crowns cover the entire tooth and are used when teeth are damaged, weakened, or need structural support. Crowns are about protection and restoration, not just appearance.

If your tooth is cracked, has a large filling, or has had a root canal, you need a crown — not a veneer.

Frequently asked questions

How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care, crowns typically last 10–15 years, though many last 20+ years. Longevity depends on your oral hygiene, bite forces, and habits like teeth grinding. Regular check-ups help us monitor the crown and catch any issues early.
Is getting a crown painful?
No. We use local anaesthetic during the preparation appointment, so you won't feel pain — just some pressure. After the anaesthetic wears off, you might have mild sensitivity for a day or two, but most patients experience minimal discomfort. Your temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is being made.
Can I eat normally with a crown?
Yes! Once your permanent crown is cemented, you can eat normally. Crowns are designed to withstand normal chewing forces. We do recommend avoiding extremely hard foods (like ice or hard candy) that could damage any tooth — natural or crowned.
Will my crown look natural?
Absolutely. Modern dental materials allow us to create crowns that match your natural teeth in colour, translucency, and shape. We take the time to ensure your crown blends seamlessly with your smile.
How long does a bridge last?
Like crowns, bridges typically last 10–15 years with good care. Because bridges rely on the teeth on either side for support, maintaining excellent oral hygiene around the bridge is essential for longevity.
What are the alternatives to a dental bridge?
The main alternatives for replacing missing teeth are dental implants (which don't require crowning adjacent teeth) or removable partial dentures (which are less expensive but not fixed in place). We'll discuss all options and help you choose what's best for your situation.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
In most cases, yes. Root canal treatment removes the tooth's nerve and blood supply, making it more brittle and prone to fracture. A crown protects the tooth and allows you to use it normally without risk of breaking it.
Can I get a crown if I have gum disease?
We'll need to treat the gum disease first. Crowns placed on unhealthy gums don't last as long and can lead to complications. Once your gums are healthy, we can proceed with confidence.
How do I care for my crown or bridge?
Care for crowns and bridges the same way you care for natural teeth — brush twice daily, floss daily, and come in for regular check-ups and cleanings. With bridges, you'll need to floss under the artificial teeth using special floss threaders or a water flosser.
What is a CEREC crown?
A CEREC crown is a ceramic crown designed and milled in the practice using a digital scanner and an on-site milling unit, which allows suitable crowns to be completed in a single visit rather than over two appointments.
Will I still need a temporary crown with CEREC?
For suitable same-day CEREC cases, no. The crown is made and fitted in the same appointment, which removes the need for a temporary crown and a second visit. Some more complex or cosmetic cases are still better made in a laboratory, and we'll let you know if that applies to you.

Worried about cost?

We never want cost to stand between you and the care you need. We accept all health funds, with HICAPS claiming on the day so you only pay the balance — and flexible payment plans are available, just ask our team. CBHS members can also ask about in-practice claiming for routine exams, cleans and X-rays.
