Our approach to teeth whitening
A whiter smile is one of the simplest things we can do to help you feel more confident — but only when it's done on healthy teeth and for the right reasons. Over more than thirty years I've seen plenty of people spend money on whitening that was never going to work for their situation.
So we start with a look, not a gel. If the problem is surface staining, a professional clean often does more than any bleach. If it's the natural shade of the tooth, whitening is likely to help. And if it's an old filling, a crown or a single dark tooth, whitening usually isn't the answer on its own — I'll tell you that up front rather than after you've paid for it.
When whitening is right for you, we do it in a way that's controlled, comfortable and effective — and we keep an eye on sensitivity the whole way through.

Teeth darken for all sorts of reasons — coffee, tea and red wine, smoking or vaping, the natural changes that come with age, thinning enamel that lets the darker layer beneath show through, or an old knock to a single tooth years ago. Each of those responds differently.
I'd rather begin with why your teeth are the colour they are than with how white you want to go. Get the cause right and the result is better, more even, and longer lasting.
In-chair whitening: a faster result
In-chair whitening is done here at the practice under supervision. It's the option people usually choose when there's an event coming up, or they simply want to see a change quickly. Because we're controlling the process and protecting your gums throughout, we can use professional-strength gel safely and manage any sensitivity as we go.

Take-home whitening: gradual and in your control
Take-home whitening uses custom trays made to fit your teeth, along with professional gel you use at home over a couple of weeks. It's a gentler, more gradual approach, and it puts the pace in your hands — which suits people with a bit of sensitivity, or anyone who'd prefer to ease into it. Many patients like having the trays afterwards for the occasional top-up.
For a lot of people the best answer is a combination: a head start in the chair, then trays to reach and hold the shade you want.
"Can I get Zoom?"
Patients often ask for a whitening brand by name, and that's completely fair — you hear about them online and from friends. But from where I sit, the brand isn't the first question. What matters more is whether your teeth and gums are suited to whitening, whether you have restorations in your smile line, how sensitive your teeth are, and what shade is realistically achievable for you. Once we've worked through that, I'm happy to talk through specific systems. The recommendation should come from your mouth, not the marketing.

Whitening won't change crowns, veneers or fillings
This is worth knowing before you start: whitening gel only lightens natural tooth enamel. It won't change the colour of a crown, a veneer or a white filling. So if you have restorations in the front of your smile, whitening your natural teeth can actually make those older pieces look darker by comparison. It's not a reason to avoid whitening — it just means we plan the order of things properly, which occasionally means replacing a filling or veneer after whitening so everything matches.
Keeping sensitivity comfortable
The most common worry I hear about whitening is sensitivity. For most people it's mild and settles within a day or two, and because we're supervising the process we can adjust the strength, slow the pace, or use desensitising products to keep you comfortable.
